I approach therapy with a client-centered interpersonal stance to create a non-judgemental, collaborative relationship. I have over 25 years experience working with adolescents, adults, couples and families.
My specific area of expertise is working with adolescent girls, from pre-adolescence through college-age. My primary focus is to help teens sort through their feelings and values, and begin to determine their own set of personal goals; and to help them be able to communicate effectively with both thier parents and peers. In the context of a trusting, accepting therapeutic relationship, teens are encouraged to find healthy, safe coping skills to replace possible unhealthy behaviors such as substance abuse, self-harm or sexual acting out. Realizing that adolesents want to be treated with respect and that they want their budding maturity to be recognized and validated....I offer them a time and space in which they are able to explore their potential, reveal their worries and sadness, and appreciate their uniqueness.
I have a deep respect for both the adults and adolescents seeking help through therapy and appreciate that entering therapy can be daunting. It often comes at a time when one feels the most vulnerable. With that in mind, I try to create an environment where patients feel safe and free to discuss any problem. With my adult patients, who have may have more negative life experiences to overcome, my approach to therapy is that.... while we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your present life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
If you're looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you are seeking guidance with helping your teenage son or daughter navigate the challenges of adolescence, I feel I can offer expertise and compassion to effect needed change.
